🌍 During World War I, French naval forces occupied the Syrian island of Arwad (known in French as Île Rouad) in September 1915 to establish a strategic base in the Eastern Mediterranean.
📫 The following year, in 1916, regular French postage stamps—such as the Blanc, Mouchon, and Sower (Semeuse) types—were overprinted with the words "Île Rouad" to serve the communication needs of the military administration and the local population.
⭐ These provisional issues remain a fascinating and relatively scarce philatelic footprint of the complex naval and political maneuvering in the Levant during the Great War.
