🏰 Johore: A Sultanate in Stamps 🏰

🏝 Johore, today written Johor, occupies the southern gateway of the Malay Peninsula, facing Singapore across one of Asia's busiest maritime corridors. Its nineteenth-century modernization is closely associated with Sultan Abu Bakar, remembered as a ruler who strengthened administration, developed Johor Bahru, and guarded the state's special identity at a time when many neighbouring territories were drawn more tightly into British colonial systems.

📯 For collectors, Johore is one of the most attractive of the Malayan States because its stamps show a clear postal personality from the beginning. The first Johore adhesives appeared in 1876 as Straits Settlements stamps overprinted for local use, before the state moved into its own portrait issues, surcharges, royal definitives, tiger designs, and later federation-era issues.

📫 The classic period rewards close study. Overprints, surcharge settings, watermarks, perforations, papers, shades, and cancellations can all matter, and the transition from separate sultanate issues to post-war Malayan and Malaysian postal structures gives Johore material a story that is both local and imperial. Stamps of Sultan Abu Bakar and Sultan Ibrahim are especially central to the identity of the state.

⭐ A Johore page is therefore more than a regional album section: it is a compact history of Malay sovereignty, British influence, royal imagery, and specialized overprint collecting, all seen through the stamps of one of the most distinctive Malayan States.
