🏛 Tokelau is a small Polynesian territory in the South Pacific, made up of the three coral atolls Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. Formerly known as the Union Islands and later the Tokelau Islands, it is a non-self-governing territory of New Zealand, which gives its postal history a close connection to New Zealand administration and Pacific island mail routes.
📯 Tokelau began issuing its own stamps in 1948. Early issues are especially interesting because they mark the movement from a remote dependency using wider New Zealand postal arrangements towards a distinct Tokelau philatelic identity. The first period used pounds, shillings and pence, while later issues followed the decimal currency changes used in New Zealand and the Pacific.
📫 Because Tokelau has no large towns and no central capital in the usual sense, its stamps often feel very different from mainland postal histories. They record a world of atolls, boats, coconut palms, fishing, churches, community life, local culture and long-distance links to Samoa and New Zealand.
⭐ For collectors, Tokelau is a compact but charming Pacific field: small population, isolated geography, New Zealand administrative background, strong island themes, changing currency systems and modern topical issues that often reflect life on low-lying coral atolls.
